National Forestry Conference 2008
New Forestry Initiatives - Opportunities for the Sector
The National Forestry Conference 2008 takes place on Friday 7 March 2008, at the Johnstown House Hotel, Enfield, Co Meath.
The forest sector is now at a stage where it must look to position itself to maximise its potential. The various social, environmental and economic benefits of the forest sector are well documented and provide many opportunities, and new initiatives are now required to capitalise on these opportunities.
This conference, organised by COFORD, the Irish Timber Growers Association, and the Society of Irish Foresters, will address some of the important developments and initiatives in this area.
Professor Gerry Boyle, Teagasc Director, will present a paper addressing the key theme of this conference. A significant feature of our private forest estate is the increase in the volume of private roundwood forecast to come to the market and Henry Phillips, Forestry Consultant, will address this issue. With growing private timber sales the Irish Timber Growers Association has been active in compiling information on timber prices, guidelines on thinning and are currently developing a timber sales security protocol for the private sector. Donal Whelan of the ITGA will outline these initiatives and make this information available to delegates. Tom Kent of the Waterford Institute of Technology will address the potential of wood biomass and outline practical systems for getting wood biomass from the forest to the market, based on experiences gained during the COFORD-funded ForestEnergy programme. New and revised grant schemes will provide new opportunities for the sector and Seamus Dunne from the Forest Service will outline the new forestry schemes for delegates.
There will be a further opportunity to discuss and learn more about these new schemes and initiatives at the information stands over coffee after the conference.
